The ancient Tibetan tradition of carpet making was originally intended for religious functions, as many artifacts destined for temples were knotted, but its artistry gradually spilled into the everyday. In fact, Tibetans also produced carpets for saddling, reinforced with fabric or felt linings. That’s what this piece owes its curious butterfly shape to: it used to be a saddle, decorated with traditional good fortune symbols.
