The making of carpets in Portugal dates back to the Renaissance period using the braid stitch, embroidered on large hemp tea towels with the needle. The Portuguese carpet is called Arraiolos from the name of the southern Portuguese town from which they come.
The prevailing colors are the delicate greens and the pale pinks, more rare the yellows. In the eighteenth century, the inspiration of more western taste took the place of the oriental one, thus revolutionizing the decorative part. The Portuguese carpet that was previously worked by the guests of the women’s prison, today has become a characteristic handicraft of the region and it happens to see in the villages, in front of their houses, the weavers, who are both men and women.
